Life in Thatcher’s Britain
Parody in a Pensioner’s Mood: On Water Sell-Offs, Poll Tax, and Tory Rule
Och Jesus! Michty me, can it be true?
That they are sellin’ aff the watter noo
The advertisin’s been on my teevee
They’re tryin’ tae bump oot shares tae you an’ me.
Noo ah wis aught that rain fell frae the sky
Nae charge wis pit on it by God, foreby
But greedy human beings seek to price
The watter which ah dinnae think is very nice.
They want tae line their pockets oot o’ us
They say we shouldnae mak a lot o’ fuss
Efter a’ they’ve pit their capital intae plant
And even under pressure winnae recant.
But dinnae be amazed, it’s nae mystery
There’s ay been sell-offs, throughout history
Fae ‘clearances’ tae coal, it’s pretty plain
Resources hae been flogged, then flogged again.
Humans hae traded in baith meat and men
Black people selt for slavery, and then
Of coorse, deep doon we ken it wisnae recht
But bisiness must continue, cash is techt.
The poll tax, there’s anither load o’ piss
It’s sad that life should hiv tae come tae this
That everyone should pay exact the same
Wi’ scant regard tae income, whit a game.
But wait! There is a remedy at hand
Tae oust thon tyrant Thatcher fae oor land
The nation needs tae vote t’ither way
An’ Thatcherist ideals will cease ……….today!
I ken you’ve had aboot enough
O’ me an’ all this literary stuff
Please dinnae say tae me that life’s unfair
For if ‘they’ could ‘they’d’ tak the very air
But freends, that is anither story
An’ don’t blame me, I’ve nivir voted Tory!
